In a treatment plant, the nitrogen removal process can directly impact the performance and operating cost of the entire system.

That is why simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) technology has been attracting more and more attention among professionals in the field — especially when applied in aerated lagoon systems. It is a solution that integrates the two biological steps in a single reactor, without phase separation or the need for a defined anoxic zone.

This process has proven highly effective in many industrial sectors, delivering excellent performance in removing nitrogen and organic compounds, with a significant reduction in operating and structural costs.

What is the SND process?

SND, or Simultaneous Nitrification and Denitrification, is a biological process in which the conversion of ammonia into nitrite/nitrate (nitrification) and the subsequent removal of nitrate through denitrification take place simultaneously in the same biological reactor.

In other words, the technology eliminates the need for separate zones (aerated and anoxic) and for the high internal recirculation rates common in conventional processes.

This advance represents a paradigm shift in wastewater treatment, especially in systems with continuous aerated lagoons.

Why apply SND in aerated lagoons?

Applying SND in aerated lagoons combines operational simplicity with very high removal efficiency, even at high flow rates and substantial organic loads. Some of the main advantages include:

✅ 30% to 50% reduction in CAPEX and OPEX compared to conventional systems;
✅ Smaller area required to install the system;
✅ Elimination of internal recirculation, with lower energy consumption;
✅ Stable operation with less need for strict dissolved oxygen control;
✅ Proven efficiency in removing total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, BOD and COD.

Application in the meatpacking industry

Linsul took part in the implementation of SND technology in the wastewater treatment system of a large meatpacking plant slaughtering poultry and pigs and producing processed products, with a flow rate of 19,200 m³/day. The results were impressive:

Parameter

These results reinforce the potential of SND as a robust and efficient solution for meeting the strictest environmental parameters, ensuring sustainability and performance.
