Petrochemical industry
Water and wastewater treatment for petrochemical industry processes.
Solutions for oily streams, organic loads and utility water. Technologies defined according to the production process, wastewater composition and the plant's treatment goals.
Water and wastewater treatment in the petrochemical industry
The petrochemical industry uses water for cooling, steam generation, washing and various processing stages. Demand and wastewater composition vary according to the raw materials and the products manufactured.
Streams may contain hydrocarbons, oils, solids and dissolved organic compounds. Depending on the process, there may also be substances with low biodegradability, toxicity to the biomass and high salt concentrations.
Petrochemical wastewater treatment must consider the origin and compatibility of the streams, distinguishing process water, contaminated drainage and utility blowdowns.
Petrochemical industry.
Main challenges in this segment
Robust solutions for complex effluents with hydrocarbons and high chemical oxygen demand.
Oils and hydrocarbons
Free, dispersed and dissolved fractions behave differently and are not removed by the same stage.
Hard-to-biodegrade compounds
Part of the organic load may persist after biological treatment, requiring specific assessment.
Process changes and discharges
Start-ups, shutdowns and operational events can change the composition and load received by the WWTP.
Salinity and utility water
Blowdowns and recirculation concentrate salts, affecting treatment and the feasibility of reuse.
Select stages by stream composition
The treatment route depends on the hydrocarbons present, the state of the emulsions, the dissolved load, salinity and effects on the biomass. Segregation and equalization should consider the compatibility between streams.
Treatment may integrate initial oil removal, physicochemical conditioning and flotation for separable solids and contaminants. The biological stage is assessed for the biodegradable fraction, after controlling components that could inhibit the microorganisms.
DAF and biological processes do not ensure the removal of all dissolved compounds. Polishing needs should be verified through analyses and tests, as should sludge conditioning and disposal.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Industrial water treatment and the WWTP should be linked to the plant's steam, cooling and blowdown balance. The required quality changes according to the circuit served.
Water reuse in the petrochemical industry requires an assessment of salts, residual organic matter and other relevant contaminants. Filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis may be part of the project, with compatible pretreatment and a planned destination for the membrane concentrate.
