Cosmetics
Water and wastewater treatment for the cosmetics and personal care industry.
Technologies for streams with surfactants, oils and formulation residues. Solutions adapted to production campaigns, equipment cleaning and industrial water quality.
Water and wastewater treatment in the cosmetics industry
Water is part of many cosmetic formulations and is used to wash tanks, lines and equipment. Creams, shampoos, liquid soaps and other products generate different consumption and wastewater profiles.
Washing streams may contain surfactants, oils, waxes, emulsifiers, fragrances, dyes and preservatives. Formulation changes alter the organic load, foam formation and emulsion behavior.
Cosmetics wastewater treatment must consider the raw materials, the concentration of first rinses and cleaning conditions, as well as the quality required for the water used in the plant.

Main challenges in this segment
Systems to treat effluents containing surfactants and oils, typical of cosmetics and personal care production.
Oil and wax emulsions
Stable formulations can make separation harder, requiring physicochemical conditioning tests.
Surfactants and foam
Detergents and shampoo residues can affect the operation of the aeration and separation stages.
Preservatives and biodegradability
Certain ingredients can interfere with the biomass or have low biodegradability, depending on their concentrations.
Formulation changes
Campaigns and first rinses change color, pH and organic load, requiring control of the WWTP feed.
Treatment compatible with the formulations
The proportion of oils, the presence of surfactants and the use of preservatives influence the treatment. Segregating concentrated residues and controlling first rinses can be decisive for the operation.
Equalization, pH adjustment, coagulation and flocculation may come before separation by flotation. Dosing and conditioning must be assessed according to how the emulsions behave.
Biological treatment is selected based on biodegradability and possible inhibition effects. Polishing and membranes depend on the desired quality, while the separated sludge requires conditioning and dewatering suited to its composition.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Formulation water and service water must meet the needs of each line, with attention to the chemical and microbiological parameters defined for the process.
Filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis may be part of industrial water treatment. Reuse of treated wastewater depends on an assessment of the remaining contaminants and the application, without assuming use in formulations or contact with the product just because membranes are present.
