Bioenergy
Water and wastewater treatment for bioenergy plants and operations.
Solutions for water management at sugar and ethanol mills and plants that use biomass. Technologies selected according to process streams, utilities and operation during the harvest.
Water and wastewater treatment in bioenergy operations
Bioenergy production brings together different processes, such as ethanol manufacturing and power generation from biomass. Water is used for raw material processing, steam generation and cooling systems.
Washing, utility blowdowns and process streams may contain solids, organic matter, salts and temperature variations. In ethanol production, vinasse has its own characteristics and must be considered separately in the plant balance.
Wastewater treatment at mills must assess each stream, its load and its destination, considering harvest, off-season and production changes.

Main challenges in this segment
Equipment and systems designed for power plants and energy generation processes, promoting greater operational efficiency.
Seasonal operation
Changes between harvest and off-season alter flows and loads, requiring planning of treatment start-up and operation.
Quality for steam and cooling
Salts and solids in the water can promote scaling and deposits, depending on utility conditions.
Concentrated organic streams
Vinasse and other by-products should not be treated as diluted wastewater without a specific assessment of composition and destination.
Solids from raw materials
Soil, fibers and biomass particles may need to be removed before pumps and downstream stages.
A strategy for each stream at the plant
Treatment selection depends on the raw material, the conversion process, the utilities and the intended destinations for liquid streams. Temperature, organic load, salinity and the harvest schedule influence the sizing.
Treatment of compatible wastewater may integrate solids removal, equalization, physicochemical separation and biological processes. Highly concentrated streams, such as vinasse, need their own assessment, and their full treatment is not assumed in this configuration.
Thickening and dewatering stages handle the sludge generated at the WWTP, with equipment selected according to the presence of fibers, minerals and biomass.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Water planning links intake water, utility feed, blowdowns and industrial wastewater. Reducing losses also depends on controlling recirculation and water quality in each circuit.
Filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis may be part of water treatment for industrial uses. Reuse depends on the required quality and the salt balance, including the handling of the concentrate produced by the membranes.
Technologies for bioenergy operations
Linsul's technologies can serve industrial water and the wastewater streams compatible with each stage. The selection considers the mill's process and does not assume full treatment of vinasse.
