Beverage Industry
Water treatment, wastewater and reuse solutions for the beverage industry.
Technologies for breweries and soft drink, juice and other beverage plants. Systems sized for production water and wastewater from preparation, bottling and cleaning.
Water and wastewater treatment in the beverage industry
In the beverage industry, water may be part of the product and is used for preparation, bottling and cleaning. Its composition must match the specifications of each beverage and the requirements of the utilities.
Product losses and washing generate wastewater with sugars, organic matter and, in some operations, alcohol, yeast and fruit particles. Cleaning cycles add acidic or alkaline streams and sanitizers.
Sizing a beverage WWTP must consider the type of product, batch changes, the bottling schedule and cleaning frequency, as well as the dissolved portion of the organic load.
Beverage Industry.
Main challenges in this segment
Solutions for treating effluents rich in sugars and organic matter, ensuring compliance and production efficiency.
Sugars and dissolved product
Losses of syrups, juices or beverages can raise the organic load even when the wastewater contains few solids.
Cleaning cycle discharges
Concentrated cleaning streams change pH and flow, requiring control before biological treatment.
Yeast and fruit particles
Breweries and juice processors may require solids separation specific to their raw materials.
Composition of the beverage water
Salts, turbidity and other characteristics must be controlled according to the recipe and the required water quality.
Size treatment for product, bottling and cleaning
Breweries, juice factories and soft drink plants have different profiles of solids and dissolved load. Product losses, seasonality and cleaning schedules guide the sizing.
Treatment may combine screening, when solids are present, equalization and pH adjustment. Flotation is assessed for separable particles; dissolved sugars and alcohol require other stages, such as biological treatment when technically appropriate.
MBBR or MBR may be considered depending on load, available area and intended quality. The project should include sludge handling and assess the effect of sanitizers on the biomass.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Integrated management links formulation water, service water and wastewater from preparation and cleaning. Each use needs its own quality parameters.
Filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis may be part of the treatment, depending on the characteristics of the water source and the process. Reuse of treated wastewater requires assessment of the application and sanitary conditions; it should not be assumed suitable as an ingredient or for contact with the product.
