Food Sector
Water treatment, wastewater and reuse solutions for the food industry.
Technologies for meatpacking plants, dairies and food processing, considering production and cleaning loads. Systems sized to integrate water quality, contaminant removal and sludge management.
Water and wastewater treatment in the food industry
Water is used in food preparation, raw material washing, facility cleaning and industrial utilities. Meatpacking plants, dairies and food factories have different quality and supply demands.
Wastewater may contain blood, proteins, fats, sugars, starches and processing solids. Cleaning routines add detergents, sanitizers and pH variations, changing the composition over the course of each shift.
Sizing a food industry WWTP must consider the product manufactured, raw material losses, washing flows and the organic load actually sent to treatment.
Food Sector.
Main challenges in this segment
One of the pillars of the global economy, responsible for the production, processing and distribution of food.
Process fats and solids
Meat, milk and ingredient residues must be separated before they overload pumps and downstream WWTP stages.
Cleaning peaks
Washing and cleaning cycles can concentrate flow, chemicals and pH changes in short periods.
Organic load and nutrients
Proteins, sugars and other residues require treatment of the dissolved fraction, with nitrogen and phosphorus assessed according to the operation.
Water quality by application
Food-contact water and utility water require different criteria, which must guide treatment and distribution.
Treatment defined by the food and the process
A dairy plant and a meatpacking plant do not generate the same wastewater. Fat content, solids, organic load, temperature and cleaning frequency influence the selection and sizing of the stages.
The system may combine screening, equalization, pH adjustment and flotation to separate solids and fats. Biological treatment handles the dissolved biodegradable portion, while sludge separation and dewatering complete the treatment line.
The choice between biological technologies and polishing stages depends on wastewater analyses and the intended effluent quality.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Integrated management links production water supply, utilities and the treatment of washing and processing wastewater.
Water reuse in the food industry should start from technically compatible applications and a sanitary assessment. Filtration and membranes may be part of the treatment, but installing them does not, on its own, make the water suitable for food contact.
