Pharmaceutical Sector
Water and wastewater treatment for pharmaceutical industry processes.
Solutions sized for industrial water requirements and the diversity of manufacturing and cleaning wastewater. The choice of technologies considers formulations, production campaigns and the quality required in each application.
Water and wastewater treatment in the pharmaceutical industry
The pharmaceutical industry uses water to prepare formulations, wash equipment and run utilities. Specifications vary according to the product, the manufacturing stage and the process quality requirements.
Synthesis and formulation wastewater may have different profiles, including residues of active ingredients, excipients, solvents, detergents and pH variations. Campaign changeovers also alter flows and concentrations.
Pharmaceutical wastewater treatment requires stream characterization, biodegradability assessment and identification of substances that call for specific treatment or separate disposal.
Pharmaceutical Sector.
Main challenges in this segment
Essential to global health, focused on the research, development and production of innovative medicines.
Active ingredient residues
Some compounds may persist after conventional treatment, requiring a specific removal assessment.
Production campaign changes
Different cleaning products and routines change the load sent to the WWTP and make uniform operation harder.
Interference with biological treatment
Solvents, sanitizers and certain formulations can inhibit the biomass, depending on the concentrations present.
Process water specifications
Conductivity, organic matter and microbiological quality must be assessed according to the use and manufacturing requirements.
Characterize the streams before defining the technologies
Treatment should distinguish synthesis, formulation, laboratory and cleaning wastewater. Product composition, solvent concentration and campaign frequency determine which streams can be treated together.
The configuration may integrate segregation, equalization, pH adjustment and physicochemical stages. Biological processes, including MBBR or MBR, are assessed when biodegradability and the absence of inhibition support their use.
Membrane separation does not mean the removal of all active ingredients. Persistent compounds require further assessment, without attributing unproven performance to any single technology.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Water supply and the WWTP should be planned taking into account cleaning wastewater and the concentrated streams from membrane treatment.
Filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis may be part of industrial water treatment depending on the required quality. Critical pharmaceutical applications depend on the complete system and its qualification; reuse should be assessed for uses compatible with the risk and the plant's conditions.
