Tannery
Water and wastewater treatment for every stage of leather processing.
Solutions sized for solids, organic load and the chemical characteristics of the baths. Technologies selected according to the beamhouse, tanning and finishing processes carried out at the facility.
Water and wastewater treatment in tanneries
Leather processing uses water in soaking, the beamhouse, tanning and subsequent stages, depending on the facility's activity. Full-cycle tanneries and finishing operations have different wastewater profiles.
Streams may contain hair, proteins, fats, salts, sulfides and pH variations. When the process uses chromium salts, this contaminant must also be considered, as must tannins and finishing products when present.
A tannery WWTP must assess streams by origin, their compatibility and the specific treatments needed before combining them with the main flow.
Tannery.
Main challenges in this segment
Systems for effluents with high organic load and chromium, reducing the environmental impact of the tanning process.
Sulfides and acidic streams
Improper mixing can release hydrogen sulfide, requiring segregation and technical control of the streams.
Chromium, when used
Chromium baths require specific assessment of removal and of handling the waste generated.
Hair, fats and proteins
Beamhouse residues raise the solids and organic matter load, requiring separation and additional treatment.
Salts and variations between baths
Salinity and pH changes make treatment harder and can limit water recirculation.
Organize the baths before combined treatment
The configuration depends on the stages carried out, the tanning agent, the sulfide content and salinity. Sulfide-bearing and chromium-bearing streams, when present, should be assessed for segregation and specific treatment.
The line may integrate screening, equalization of compatible streams, pH adjustment, contaminant-specific treatments and physicochemical separation. Flotation or settling is selected according to the characteristics of the solids and flocs.
Biological treatment handles the biodegradable load after the necessary controls. Sludge separation and dewatering must take its composition into account, without assuming that all waste has the same classification or destination.
Integrated water, wastewater and reuse
Integrated management should distinguish supply water, washing streams and process baths. Water efficiency also depends on how these streams are organized within the facility.
Reuse in tanneries requires checking salts, sulfides, chromium when present and other contaminants relevant to the application. Filtration reduces particles but does not solve salinity on its own; the treatment configuration should result from analyses and the actual requirements of the process.
